If the presidential election were held tomorrow, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) thinks Hillary Clinton would come out on top.

"I would bet, my friend, as much as I hate to admit it, that right now – this is why we have campaigns – but right now, if the election were tomorrow, Hillary Clinton would most likely be the president of the United States," McCain told CNN's Piers Morgan on Thursday.

The Arizona Republican cautioned that the former secretary of state "wouldn't be my candidate." McCain's comments were in response to Rep. Michele Bachmann's (R-MN) remark that she didn't see a "pent-up desire" for a woman president (note that she ran for the Republican presidential nomination herself in 2012).

"I just have a very different reading of the American political scene," McCain responded, citing the growing number of women serving in Congress and in state leadership, like his home state Gov. Jan Brewer (R). Clinton has said she'll decide next year on whether to launch a 2016 bid.
