Can McDonald’s ruin your relationship with your child?
It would have sounded like a stupid question, if there hadn’t been a unique precedent.
David Schorr who is going to divorce with his wife Bari Yunis Schorr seems to lose in a custody battle concerning their 4-year-old son. McDonald’s appeared to be a stumbling block.
Schorr has filed a charge with defamation against psychologist Marilyn Schiller for telling a judge that he was a “wholly incapable” because he hadn’t taken his kid to the fast-food when he demanded it.
When the father had once visited his son, the boy insisted on having a meal at the Golden Arches (fast-food), while his father offered him to go to the Manhattan restaurant where they usually have a meal. Being aware of the junk-food damage, David Schorr refused to take his son to McDonald’s and offered his son to choose any other place to eat at. The boy went off into hysterics, so the father had to take the boy back home without a meal at all. “I think it was a 1950s’ equivalent of sending your child to bed without dinner,” he confessed afterwards.
If he had been able to turn back the time, he would have given in and have taken his boy wherever he wanted. For now, as he is “wholly incapable,” according to the psychologist, the time Schorr can spend with his son is restricted. Now the suit he has filed against the psychologist is his only chance to return the son.
David Schorr charged Marilyn Schiller with slander concerning his incapability and with her failure to discuss it with him before reporting it to the judge. Schorr also suspects that whole this defamation was his wife’s idea.
In my opinion, the father has made a mistake by taking this irritated boy back home instead of dealing with him in his own reasonable way. He went wrong returning his son to mommy in a critical situation, for this way he showed that he really didn’t know what to do with his son.
Manhattan family therapist Michelle Ascher Dunn said what Schorr did was good parenting.
“You don’t fold because a child demands something,” she said. “Parents have to have a set of values they follow. This is not like withholding medical care, it’s saying no to McDonald’s.”
