Anyone have any experience doing this for a living or know of anyone that does?

A lot of turnaround, the reps don't tend to stay long.

High pressure to meet quotas.

You can't even give physicians pens anymore due to the sunset regulations.

Overall most reps i meet are not happy with their jobs.

I have a buddy who does this who is apparently very good at it. He makes a pretty decent low 6 living and says the job is very easy for him, to the point where he says there's no challenge to it, according to him.

He says it's basically just him going around to a number of doctors in the area and showing them what he's got, and them pretty much always saying "yes" and getting more from him whenever he comes around again or calls.

His experience may not be typical - I get the feeling that much of his business may come from him and his family being well-connected and having personal relationships and longterm business relationships with many of his doctor clients. His wife is a RN, for example, and he's known for spending lots of time at his country club playing golf with doctors.

He did say that one company he worked for many years ago had an upper-5 figure cap on his income back then, but he said that apparently that wasn't typical in the industry.

I'd do it for the potential steroid hookup.

Did it for twelve years and went back to real sales job.  Avoid this industry it is collapsing. Best years have come and gone.

If you are a single dude it could be fun for a couple of years. Some companies have much higher percentage of hot chicks than others.  I worked at 3 different places and all unique in own right.

Couple years in the industry looks good on resume but don't get caught in trap most retard reps do. They rely solely on company vehicle and budget their lives around not having a car payment.  When they get laid off, canned or wish to leave they cannot because they are spread too financially thin and have zero transportation. We called it the golden handcuffs.....avoid this trap at all costs.  I don't regret getting  experience in this industry but should have left sooner.

If you are married don't go into this field......it will end in divorce.  Trust me on this one.

This used to be a great career; now, not so much.  There has been a huge amount of consolidation in the industry akin to what we have seen in banking over the last 20 years.  The qualifications to be a sales rep or Medical Liaison, as they are often called, have steadily gone up (having a doctoral degree in pharmacy and/or an MBA is not uncommon).  If you don’t have these kinds of credentials you are facing stiff competition when the time comes time to find a job. Even if you have a great position you could quickly lose it when your company is bought by a parent who is looking to trim costs (those pesky employees are too well paid).  One way to save costs is to let the Liaisons go and the ones who remain are tasked with covering more territory.  If you used to cover a region like the Bay Area or South Florida suddenly you are tasked with covering the entire state or the 3-6 states in your region of the country.  Ta daa; huge savings for the company!  And more work for the Liaison who manges to still have a job.

If you manage to survive the layoffs you are still at risk because they could get rid of you in the next round. In addition to selling product, the job has basically become a game of musical chairs.  Eventually, you may be left without a chair.

As in law, some reps make a huge amount of money, but you have to be lucky and really hustle to get into that tier of the profession, and at any point in your ascension it could all come crashing down when you are laid off.  As mentioned above, you typically get a car to drive, but don’t think it will be anything high end.  A good friend of mine has been laid off at least 3x times in the last four years and each time it has taken him longer and longer to land another job.  He is very unhappy. :'(

Well said and truth.

The cars have gotten crappier as gas prices have escalated.

Layoffs often happen with zero warning. One company I worked for had four rounds of "stay at home wait by the phone" days where you were afraid when phone rang your job was gone.  I dodged bullet 3x and on the fourth I was laid off with 7 other members including my manager of the ten person "team" I was on.

Every rep I know hated the job and was on suicide watch.

If you don't live beyond your means and prepare for worst you can survive industry and manage stress levels.

It really is no longer a sales job, more like a glorified catering gig.  I got to point I was embarrassed to be part of it and avoided telling anyone what I even did if it came up in conversation.  Leaving wasn't easy but now 10x happier and making more money in a real sales position that I enjoy.  Breaking the golden handcuffs not easy and I have many friends still stuck who either cannot or will not leave due to fear or mismanaged finances.
