I could totally understand if the suicides were a result of getting divorced... where the woman gets 50-60% of everything you've ever had and/or worked for. A man is at the mercy of the divorce court judge and has absolutely no recourse.
Whatever you do... DO NOT GET MARRIED!
Women and men both needed to change when women demanded and got more equality with men.
The courts still have a built in bias when it comes to woman, child custody and divorce $$.
You are somewhat correct on marriage being bad for men, but it depends on:
1. If the woman has a decent career and makes good $$
2. If you have kids and who gets majority custody
3. The legal reason given for the divorce on the decree .
If the guy cheated ( adultery) , he's screwed.
I have been married 4x which means I've had 3 previous divorces.
I never had any major $$ issues in any divorce and here's why:
1. I never had kids. In my mind, kids are work, $$ and stress .
Granted , some love being parents, but having kids can be a nightmare for the man if a divorce comes.
2. My wives all had decent jobs/ careers and made their own $$. My current wife is a VP of her section for a major bank. She makes a LOT more then I do.
Any man who gets married to a woman who wants to stay home to raise kids is asking for (future) problems if they get divorced.
A modern marriage needs to be a partnership now and can be. The old division of labor ( woman= housewife, man= breadwinner) is out of date now.
Unless you really, really desire children, AVOID traditional marriage roles and marry a woman with a decent job
