Unless they had flares in hand, no warning would have helped. And even then, you are expecting people who are seemingly going too fast in bad conditions to pay attention. Running on the side of the icy road may mean you may get hit. Run on the snow covered ground, possibly.
You'd have to make it to 500-1000 meters up. And at the same time you are running, people are still crashing.

Why didn't the semi drivers issue a distress call on their cb radios? Watching those trucks come in it looked as if braking wasn't an option,  plowing full force into the carnage ahead was the only reasonable means of stopping.

I wondered the same thing. Who knows? Read on the comments that many don't use the CB anymore because you have too many idiots yammering on it.

The problem with plowing into the carnage is that you can kill someone or cause an explosion or gas leak.

I have done it 35+ years with car, with bike, with truck, every fucking winter, so snow isn't such a big miracle to me. I have been driving fucking rally at the polar circuit, so I know how to drive in that weather. Here is what I know as a fact: You shouldn't drive such way, that you are hazard to your child or another drivers. It is simple as that. If your visibility is less than meter longer than your nose, stop somewhere safe place or die. Quite simple, isn't it? Driving like moron in the visibility of zero meters isn't mark of the high intelligence, it is mark of the death wish

Apparently everyone is important and needs to get where they're going as fast as possible.

People act like it's a race. Pay attention during commercials for cars/car parts, the advertised product is always shown passing other drivers. People see these commercials and suddenly think that during their drive to the grocery store they need be in the front, they're like kids in the school lunch line, thinking that they're winning or something if they are half a bumper ahead.
