A question for photographers/videographers/show promoters
« on: January 12, 2015, 08:39:23 PM »
The pictures and videos of the competitors taken by the photographers and videographers during the shows, what happens to them after the shows are over and the competitor doesn't buy the video or photos?  I would assume that they are junked but don't really know.

I have pictures for some of the shows I was in but not all of them, nor do I have videos.  I was a poor aspiring bodybuilder with a pay the bills job, but without the money to pay for the photos/videos, barely able to afford the bodybuilder's breakfast at the Firehouse.  Sadly, I do not have the pictures from when I was in my best shape at my last show.

Does anyone think there is any chance of getting photos or video from these shows.  They were back in the early 90s, local or regional shows in the SoCal area.  I'd pay a pretty penny now.

The problem is that the magazines didn't pay well for photos. That meant that photographers shot contests as a hobby. There were a few 'pros' who covered contests for magazines but only the major shows. At every contest there are people taking photos. Perhaps the best chance of finding photos is to contact the promoter and get a list of competitors and see if any of them have photos that you might be in. I was in a contest in 1975 and someone from my gym took slides. We had them in our gym for people to look at. Some slides showed Arnold as the guest poser. Would you believe someone stole those slides and I don't have copies. So I don't have any photos from that contest. Melbourne is a long way from Sydney so it isn't easy to contact other competitors. The promoter, Frank Burwash, passed away long ago.
Good luck.

Those look like pictures from magazines he printed out.  I'm talking about a lower level show where they have an official photographer set up who takes pictures of the competitors if they want with the hopes of selling them the photos later.   Kind of the same racket as school photos for kids.

Same with the video the official videographer for the show filming the whole show.  Thanks to Vince for some well thought out suggestions.  Yes, I thought about contacting the show promoter.  I think it was Mike Glass for one.
