I'm getting a little annoyed at the French and their ramblings about protecting free speech.  This morning the Israel PM was also chiming in on it.  Pot calling the kettle black.  I'm trying to figure out the difference of the Hebdo guy knowingly creating a cartoon that would upset muslims vs. maybe making a cartoon of a bunch of jews in a gas chamber getting cooked or a bunch of blacks getting hung by their necks around a tree.  I'm pretty sure the latter two would get anyone fired from their jobs.
The media loves to promote free speech but what happens when anyone criticizes a jew?  they are immediately labeled an anti-semite and ran off the face of the earth.  Look at how many people have lost their careers for saying N I G G E R, or making fun of gays.
Would any paper get away with a drawing of a cartoon of Obama's daughter's getting ass raped by Traveon Martin?  Wouldn't that be free speech?
Knowingly saying, writing or drawing things that you know for a fact will offend a group is not free speech but hate speech.  yet somehow the media is up in arms about protect their rights.
All Americans love to promote free speech, yet don't realize that the Constitution mentions free speech without prosecution by speaking out against your government, not purposely trolling other people.
A lot want to criticize the muslims for overreacting to a cartoon.
Do me a favor.  Draw a cartoon of a bunch of blacks living like apes and walk around Compton with it on a billboard.  How long do you think your ass would last?  Would the blacks be overreacting by shooting you?
Go to Israel and pass out fliers with a cartoon of Jews with big noses and Hitler boiling them all in a pot.  Do you think these civilized Israelis would laugh at it or shoot you ass.  Would they be overreacting?

Go to cnn.com, a media site that promotes free speech.  Try writing any swear word in their comments section and see if its allowed.  Isn't that against free speech?
I just have to wonder how people promote free speech as long as it serves their own needs and views.

Depends - if you're merely talking about something just to incite a reaction then it is not about free speech entirely but the mere ability to use such even it may cross the line.
But do not forget - this vague interpretation of it, "offending" cartoons, is just to show how absurd the situation has got. There's a shitload of problems and Islam as a religion is only one of many.
Since "showcase Jews" have been our greatest "allies" they're more than happy to slowly but steadily support us in "our" struggle against one of their mortal enemies.

It all has to do with the product of our times. In the 1930's, you can use racial slander against a black person and not get fired from your job.

Muslims are the new "black" people, in a sense that we can speak out against them and not feel any repercussions due to the fear people have of them.

In 10 years, it may be a new group. It seems like every few years the world picks a new group to hate on and they become open to "attacks." And since everyone is doing it, its hardly worth holding every person accountable, since its so rampant.

BUT in cases where real free speech principles should be upheld like the whistle blowing by Snowdon and his NSA leaks, Julian Assange...etc then the west really shows its true colors on "free speech".

I guess we can fight for the freedom to insult and belittle each other as long that we don't interfere with our governments, then this becomes a criminal offence.

Dude really? There is no difference in the types of drawings... The difference is the reaction. Draw a gas chamber all you want. No rabbi is calling for your head to be cut off. If you can see the difference there is no hope for you. Outrage is one thing... Violence is another.

No, the Jews won't threaten you with violence, they will simply hit you where it hurts and financially ruin your life.  But how often do you see a comic making fun of jews or op-eds written against them?  Almost never because no media outlet would have the balls to.

Freedom of speech is very selective everywhere in the world, including the West. Embarrassing to see the Western governments give speeches on the importance of freedom of speech when certain opinions aren't allowed in their countries.
For instance, David Irving spent 2 years in an Austrian jail simply for giving opinions on the Holocaust that aren't mainstream.
