Didn't know Boyer got to watch the uncut version of the CBS 1980 Olympia footage along with few others  !

So, they didn't aired it cause it was too controversial ?

Hmmmmm The best thing that can happen to any tv network is to air a controversial show ......

So, they followed around Tinerino ,Zane ,Dickerson and Boyer all featured as the main contenders for the contest.

At then comes Arnold, unexpected out of nowhere and win it all ,  now that will make the whole crew and production look like they did a poor job by following around the wrong contestants and making the contest about everyone but the winner....

That to me makes more sense to not air the show.

Arnold was booed, fellow competitors feel he wasn't even top three
But to Arnold in general the 80's were the most successful decade due to his popularity in movies.

Which will make the controversial 1980 MrO never aired footage more attractive to mainstream audiences than pumping Iron was in the 70's

We need to get hands on that footage John !!

Absolutely! I would love to see that footage. I wonder if Sher Edwards, the guy who was in charge at CBS, is still around.

The search is on !

Btw, I like how Boyer and the rest of the guys say that Arnold looked smaller, worried and insecure ...

in the pictures he's the biggest most secure and all smiles  .

It's always hard to see things from the judges viewpoint. I tend to agree with you guys, when I see the pictures and video of the 1980 Mr. Olympia contest, I can see Arnold as the winner,
even though he wasn't at his best. However, almost everyone I've talked to who was at the show (Dickerson, Boyer, Samir, Bill Pearl) said Arnold shouldn't have been in the top five. The are
all adamant about it. Samir even said that Arnold is his hero and if he could have wished anyone would have won that year, he would have picked Arnold. But, he said Arnold was so off, that he
shouldn't have made the top five. And why did CBS Television refuse to air the footage? If Arnold looked like he could have won, they should have shown the footage with no hesitation. After all,
they paid something like $20K for the rights to film it plus traveling all the way to Australia and filming extra footage weeks in advance with Mentzer, Boyer, Dickerson and Zane.

The video has Arnold the clear winner. Mentzer is too blocky. Dickenson just not in it, too small. Zane looks far better in the video than Pics where he looks washed out. Structure is a massive thing it doesn't come up as much at the Olympia these days since to get there most guys have outstanding structures however back in 1980 they all didn't and Arnold clearly stands out.

As for the book, it seems to make out Arthur Jones was a dominate player in the 70's era, to devote a whole half book to him, is this true? He had some machines but said steroids didn't work and clearly had insecurity ego problems when Bill Pearl changed his machine for the better and he couldn't handle it.

I saw his interview on Letterman (youtube) he claims the barbell wasn't the best tool to train with. He's just bashing things that work to push his own agenda and make more money which is garbage, he doesn't have an open mind. Also his communication skills arn't too great as you can see in that Interview.

Great Thread and thanks to John we have such interviews on here. I don´t think Arnold should have won but just my opinion. Jones was a clever business man pushing his machines which do have their values but the HIT crowd make it sound like the end all of training.

Arthur Jones was definitely a weird dude! I agree with you about devoting half of that book to him, it was way too much. The first half of the book was fantastic, some great stuff in there about Pumping Iron that I never read before, including Arnold getting paid $50K to be in the movie, but the second half I couldn't even finish.

His gym was the first gym I ever joined in 1980. Caller Boe Coe's Bodymaster. Great equipment, better than most of the shit today.

The BodyMasters line of equipment was very good back in the day.
