As an aside, does everyone in the UFC have to have a stupid nickname? It's the UFC, not Getbig.

He has beaten "good veteran" fighters. I would be hesitant to say they were top quality.

Keith Jardine (really?  :D)

Tim Kennedy

Costas Philippou

Tim Boetsch

Michael Bisping

I will give him credit where it is due, he looked great against Machida, and he has won the fights against good competition.

But we are now talking about the Elite category of fighters. Weidman, Jacare, and Anderson Silva etc....

Rockhold is 1-1 recently against "elite" competition. He will get his chance.

Don't forget he also beat Jacare at Strikeforce.

So, technically, the only two elite fighters he has yet to face are Weidman and Silva. Silva won't be fighting anytime soon, so it's really down to just Weidman.

Too long ago for the Jacare fight.

Both gius have evolved since then.

They were saying that Jacare might be the best BJJ practitioner in the world right now.

Not to mention the fact that he looks juiced to the gills (for an mma fighter)

Im glad that there looks to be some good matchups ahead, regardless.

Jacare is certainly in the top 10 JiuJitsu practitioners in the world.

He definitely is one of the best (top 3) JiuJitsu guys in MMA, but to say he is the best is not exactly an easy statement to make. Demian Maia and Fabricio Werdum are both world-class BJJ practitioners. I think in a purely JiuJitsu based match, Werdum and Jacare can tie 5-5 out of 10 matches.

I am just happy that in the Middleweight division, Chris Weidman has Vitor Belfort, Jacare Souza & Luke Rockhold ahead for competition. These are all great fights.

I can't wait for the Jones vs Johnson Pay Per View. That card is incredibly stacked.

when it comes to BJJ the best ive seen come to MMA is Roger Gracie. He was way too lean to be 170 (6ft 4) and his striking is less than stellar but i believe his BJJ is beyond that of even Werdum.

Madness to think that ive seen Frank Mir ranked above him in certain "polls".

Just my opinion.

As you cats may remember (or not) I worked for Strikeforce for several years. I met Luke in 2009. Luke trains at AKA in San Jose and I live in San Francisco. I am down at AKA every few months. I have seen Luke every few months for 5-6 years.  He always looks the same. He is never soft or out of shape. I know for a fact his diet is always tight. When he's prepping for a fight his diet is fanatical. Not bodybuilding fanatical, but fanatical.

Is he natural? He just might be. Here's something that helps me believe he might be natural-

-Luke does not train with weights, ever. He does not. It's crazy. All the AKA guys lift weights, Cain Valasquez, Daniel Cormier, Josh Thompson but Luke does not. Amazing genetics.

One of the best was a ref at the show:

Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro

That said, for a combination of BJJ and athleticism, I'll go with Jacare.

Valid points, no doubt. Jacares athleticism puts him over right now, but on current form i see Luke beating him again. When you look at Rogers record in BJJ, its a whos who of world champions he has wins - in some cases multiple wins -over. Sure hes lost on occasion but Sperry, Ribeiro, Machado, Jacare, Werdum, Maia, Garcia... i dont see anyone better than him in MMA at pure BJJ.

Maybe Royce was right, why try to dilute your skills by utilising boxing, wrestling etc when you train your whole life to choke someone out / submit them. At its purest level im not sure the elite practitioners actually need boxing & wrestling, if & when they get hold of you its more than likely game over.
