Blood workup back ( full spectrum)/ fish oil for HDL?
« on: May 04, 2015, 11:10:02 AM »
56 and everything is a-ok.
HDL was a tad low but overall cholesterol was ok .
Doc said fish oil tabs would help.

Blood pressure is starting to take an odd tact however.
It's 128/72 on avg.   The top number is a tad high since I hit 250 lbs, but the lower number stays low. Hmmmm?

I need to drop some wt to be in the ideal range on all key levels for health.

Thoughts on fish oil and lowering body wt for health reasons?

low LDL is good.
high HDL is good.

your doc is clueless if he told you to increase your LDL.

you most likely wont have any problems with that weight (i assume youre not fat?) if resting heart rate, BP and cholesterol are in check

Add fish oil or better yet supplement with Niacin (Vitamin B3 / nicotinic acid).

Take niacin with an aspirin first week to help mediate flushing (basically redness of skin / feeling of warmth).  Most pts adapt to niacin and can use without aspirin after first week or two.  Some never need the aspirin in conjunction with Niacin at all.

Available in all major pharmacies for dirt cheap.

Long acting version prescribed by docs under trade name Niaspan......only difference between branded Niaspan and OTC niacin is the long acting formulation and $130/month script cost.

Many clinical studies have proven Niacin ability to bump HDL by upwards of 30% which is a negative risk factor for CHD.

Hi Howard,

I'm not a doctor but here's my opinion:

Your blood pressure sounds fine for your age.  My doc says the new studies are actually showing it OK for older folks to have systolic even up to about 150 without worrying to much about medication, contrary to prior vogue of reducing blood pressure at all ages at all cost (not true for young persons, however) . Plus it's totally normal, as you get older, for the systolic to raise a bit and the diastolic to stay on the lower side.  Lose some weight and don't worry about it.

I am not a fan of fish oil.  Eat the fish themselves!  Wild salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines, plenty of other fatty fish can be delicious.  Sample around and see which ones you like.  If you don't like it for full meals, get tins and have it with crackers every now and then.

Even your cholesterol situation sounds good.  If TOTAL cholesterol is low (e.g., under 170 or 180), I would not worry about HDL being on the low side.  But the fatty fish plus exercise will raise that HDL right up.

My two cents.

I think it's an easier way to get your needed HDL's daily.

I understand that OP is a bit chubby.

Less worry over his HDL/  LDL (but fish oil for HDL is a bit rubbish, better to try plant sterols and / or bergamot) and much more over his fasting glucose, HbA1c, triglycerides and CRP.

Any doc looking at an over cholesterol score is a bit off the money.

Chubby? Yup, I need to drop a good 40 lbs.
That would be the biggest help.
