I haven't trained with Deads or Squats for a while and I have trained with a lighter weights and done the movements a bit slower. Always to failure. Sometimes I go a bit heavier. It has made no difference to size actually probably look better and never any injuries. I cannot see why I can't keep this up for a long time. Yes easy to say. Lifting too heavy all the time just puts too much on the body and it isn't the best way to do things.
