I remember him from WSM contests like 7 years ago, while he was smoking a cig and flashing his abs between the trials. He was like 44 yo, so he has to be 50+ on this vid.  :o

Amazing feat!

I've noticed a lot of good deadlifters have a seemingly immobile, flat lower back and curved upper back, like me.  A lot of good squatters have a mobile lower back.

I always wondered why my lower back doesn't flex or extend much, and how, or if, it can be fixed.

Nice effort with the 500 x 24.  I've done better, but it was a nice effort.

How many have you hit with 500?

Absolutely true- at Gold's Venice on more than one occasion I pulled 500 x 20 with no straps. In that video he is pulling 495, not 500 and he's using straps. With that amount of weight and reps wearing straps is huge. Once your grip strength fails all your pulling power just shuts off.   If I can complete my current cycle without injuring myself (again), I'll do it again and shoot the video. Thats a promise.

Alright. As far as grip strength, for me personally I have no problem with failing grip, never once terminated a set because of grip, so straps do not help at all, actually pull less with them. I will make a point of trying 500 for reps also in a couple of months if I don't injure myself. What does make a difference for me is touch-and-go technique vs. dead stop between reps. With dead stop, say I could do 2 reps... touch and go I could hit maybe 6 reps with the same weight - huge difference.

Touch and go vs dead stop is huge and so strange. When pulling dead stop, there's never a rep count. It's just "500" x whatever x ONE. Do this- tell yourself it's 10 pounds per rep. Tell yourself that and believe it. It works. When I pull 500 x 20... I pull 700 for a single every single time. Easily.

how old are you now, Tom? And when do you expect to end your current cycle?

btw, I just check his wiki and Nick Best is 46 yo (so not 50+ like I believed).

Mr. M, I am 52. I compete Saturday Nov 7, 2015.  My last deadlift session of the cycle will be 575 x 5 x 5 on Oct 26.  Lots of sets/reps I know but there is a reason.  I'll give 500 x 20 (no straps) a go in late October.  I'll post the video good or bad.
