Sugar: the secret to maintaining your diet?
« on: September 12, 2015, 04:08:55 PM »
Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that once you curb your sugar intake, you don't really struggle with food urges?

I'm a sugar fiend and started a sugar and junk food binge about 3 or so weeks ago. On Sunday, I decided to dial back the sugar, but not necessarily fat as I still look pretty good. It was difficult( especially since there's a Dunkin'Donuts at the end of the block and they just introduced this satanically delicious pumpkin square donut),but after about four days, I got over the intense sugar cravings. Even though I have given myself permission to eat savory/salty crap, I'm not really craving it.

Refined sugar is a drug. In addition, high fructose corn syrup which is in about everything "processed" in America is much sweeter than sugar, cheaper, and more addicting. This is why so many overweight and obese in America. They took out the fat in food and added sugar and it made the problem worse.

It is a drug. That I agree with. When I say I am a sugar fiend, I am not kidding. Wanna hear something sad? I was leaving work as early as possible so I wouldn't miss the ice cream truck.

The problem was supposed to be worse. The sugar lobby in this country is powerful. The government has been advising limiting salt intake for years, even though there is no conclusive proof that it would be beneficial to your health. We KNOW that sugar is poison, but the gov't does somersaults to avoid advising against consuming it. Look at the nutritional label of anything that contains sugar. Notice that there's no dv recommended upper limit in the sugar field? The sugar industry helped vilify salt and also helped vilify artificial sweeteners.

This made me LOL.

Anyway, you're right. This is done on purpose. All of it is connected.  :)  Once you stop, don't go back.  I've made some dramatic changes in my body and eating habits over the past couple years based on this info. It's the sugar/corn syrup and simple carbs.  Eliminate it and you are so much better in ways you wouldn't think of. Obviously moderation is the answer but since when have Americans as a whole done anything in moderation?

It takes a lot longer than 4 days for the true sugar cravings to leave the body. Expect a relapse.

And once you are off sugar, eating it as a cheat and then stopping is super hard.  But you have to be able to do this.  A zero tolerance policy is unhealthy also.  Need to be able to have a dessert here and there or you will eventually binge and lose your mind.

As far as the obesity epidemic, it's sugar AND fat and salt and everything else.

This made me LOL.

I never had a magic shell soft serve cone before this summer. My "regular" was the double cone (one chocolate, one vanilla)  with a magic shell and  sprinkles around the base.  I was telling myself that I had to get as much as possible because they would be gone soon.

Unfortunately for me, moderation is just not in my vocab when it comes to sugar. It's either binge or abstain.  The idea of only eating 1 or 2 cookies instead of a  whole box isn't even appealing to me.   :'( have kinda made peace with this being a lifetime pattern for me.
