CINCINNATI—No charges will be filed against a man who fatally shot his 14-year-old son after mistaking him for an intruder.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph Deters said Wednesday that the man, 72, won’t be charged in the Tuesday morning shooting in the basement of the Cincinnati-area home.

The man had watched his son, Georta Mack, walk to the school bus and the boy later called his father to say he was on the bus, Deters said in his statement.

The man later heard a noise in the basement and got his .45 caliber handgun before investigating, according to the prosecutor. The father told authorities that when he opened a closet door, Georta jumped out and yelled, “Boo!”

The startled man, whose name wasn’t released, fired a shot that hit the boy in the neck.

“He scared me!” the distraught father said in his 911 call. “I thought he was in school. I heard noise, so I went downstairs looking and he jumped out at me. …. Oh, God. Get here quick!”

Police said the teen had headed to the bus stop but apparently decided he wasn’t going to school and came back home through a back door.

Deters said all the forensic evidence matched the father’s account of what happened and no charges were appropriate.

“There is only one word for this — tragedy,” Deters said. “It is impossible to imagine how horrible this father must feel for mistaking his son for an intruder.”

Yeah, it totally sucks. At the fathers age, he probably got scared and just pulled the trigger.

A 72 year old man has/had a 14 year old son? WTF?  I'm I reading that right?

And the dead kids name was "Georta"? Is that even a fucking name?

And the dead idiot "...called his father to tell him he was on the school bus..."?   Who the fuck does that.

I hear this story and I frame it against my cousin's childhood. He had a stepfather who was  25+ years older than his mother. I believe the stepfather was about 65 when his stepson was 13. The guy was a grizzled, old curmudgeon. My cousin was actually a well-behaved, polite young man but they had a really contentious relationship. 72 year old grandparents are usually sweet to their grandkids if they don't have custody of them, but grandparents who have custody of their grandkids are usually venomous towards them.  They don't have time to put up with bullshit.

I'm not saying the father killed the son on purpose, just that I imagine they had a rocky relationship. The fact that the kid skipped school by going back to the house that his elderly father was in makes me think he was having problems in school.  When I said the kid might have been trying to kill the father, I'm not really joking, but kids-ME*I did some inexplicable things at that age.  The father is probably drinking up a storm tonight. I wonder if  the mom is still a part of the picture?

Well, all I could say was that I cut school A LOT and I never had no overt issues with school. It was just a lot more fun to sit home and play video games. So, who knows if the kid was just playing  hooky for the day.

Yeah, Id imagine the father is pretty much a mess. I hope he can find some peace.

What I meant by that is going back to the house that he knew his father was going to be in seems curious. It's one thing to skip school. To me, it seems entirely different to go back to your house where your dad is and hide in the basement. Of course, I'm assuming it was just a regular boring basement and his plan was to hide out there for the day. I skipped school a few times and usually it would be more than one person and we'd go to whoever's house was empty of parents and full of food.

Agreed. That makes sense. It is curious as to why he went back to the home. The only thing I could thing of was he thought his father wasnt going to be home, then realized he was home, thus him hiding in the closet. But if he didn't want to get caught, why make noise in the basement and jump out to say "boo" to get caught.?Maybe he thought at that point he was already caught, and figured he'd make a joke out of it.

I was thinking that, too. That was what I meant by old parents being mean as fuck. I KNOW. FOR. A. FACT. that they didn't have a joking relationship. So,I don't think the son was playing a practical joke on his father.
The part I quoted is more likely.

Father was an idiot. You don't shoot at a sound or movement. You need to make sure you can clearly see your target. Poor kid probably was just skipping school to watch PornHub in the basement.

It's the norm for Hebrews to give their kids funny names.   Nothing surprising there.

Good thing about the UK, if you bunk off school you get a smacked arse. No possible danger of someone shooting you because its their apparent right. Dont blame the guy, blame the system.
