Manila, Philippines.  most  bad ass city not on any list. Been there a few times and not getting better.. LA's becoming too PC, and doesn't report/list many crimes...probably half of them. Both should be on the top on anyone's list. Not listed, but Mumbai ( Bombay) has to be right up there, though when  there  I was very impressed by that city that's wide open 24/7..including the noise and smells. A very well kept secret of the violence going on there.

Mexico is divided between 5 zones, controlled by drug cartels (unofficially of course...the paid for government denies all this) . Each trying to be more deadly than the other.  Actually murders by the thousands, if being honest of what really goes on there. Learn to watch you back when there. Still SD & LA teenagers go to Tijuana for their weekend party buzz. Never reported, but rapes and beatings way up. We use to go surfing down in Baja, but haven't for a long time..even run into troubles with the locals down there.

Lot of older hippies moved to extreme Northern California/Oregon, would think it was the 1960's going through some of their colony's.

During WW2, the British were considered the best and most deadly knife fighters in the world...go figure. Don't know about to day. No doubt Mexico and Latin America have them beat by far.

Re:
Manila... You're right in the places like TONDO, etc... but in Makati you're fine until pretty late.

A tradition of political destabilization, rife corruption and factionalism, scant regard for human life despite dense Catholicism, and Telemundo programming.

One thing for sure about bloodshed: Someone didn't knuckle under when told to.  When's the last time we in the Developed Nations can say we stood so strongly for anything?

Protestants came into what is now modern day United States and Canada and cultivated/built upon the land.

Catholics went into what is now modern day Mexico, central and South America and stole the gold with little regard for anything else.

The results of this are what we see today.
