Only for Hawaiians that can trace their ancestry back to the 1750s (good luck verifying that).

Of course in their "constitution" their independence will not effect their U.S. citizenship. In others words: "We can do what we want." "You can't tell us what to do." but keep those US tax dollars flowing our way.

Aren't injuns and reservations basically the same deal?

King Kamehameha Casino proudly presents: Don Ho!  Come for the luau.  Stay for the reduction of our culture to a 3x5 postcard.

Don't need to be.

I was thinking the same thing. But I don't know if the Indians are truly independent? I mean, can they legally practice polygamy? Do they pay taxes to the Federal government? Can they have difference emissions standards for their cars? Can they make their own school curriculum.

Don't know about the rest but they pay no tax, I think.  Hence the casinos.

But do they get Federal funds? Money from the US taxpayers. That's my issue. The Hawaiian want independence but they still want to receive money from the US tax payers and keep their US citizenship. They want all the benefits but none of the responsibilities.

It's like a kid telling his parents he wants his independence and wants to move out but they still have to support him.
