Was the rationale behind switching religions.  Do people think "this religion is bullshit, let me switch to this other that is just as full as shit"

I think it's often down to a cultural fascination more than anything else. The feeling of brotherhood or community also is a major factor.

You strip away the supernatural stuff and realise they are essentially worldviews. Worldviews are ways to give meaning and purpose to life. Also, they can help an individual join a community. There is plenty of support and love to be found in relationships forged in same worldview communities. This is how some people overcome substance addiction, get a job, find a mate and have children, etc. It has as much to do with entering a community where you will love and be loved as it has with believing in woo-woo.

Some folks search out religions in pursuit of finding the one true God.

Some folks search out religions in pursuit of making themselves God.

Some folks search out religions in pursuit of mocking God.

I was born and raised a Catholic. In 1997 I left the Catholic church to a non-denominational Christian church. My wife, however is a devout Catholic, never missed a day of church since we met, is a lector and never misses a Saint's a day.

Some folks don't search out religion at all.
