Would You Fly On A Chinese Designed And Built Airplane?
« on: April 16, 2016, 07:44:08 AM »
The Comac ARJ-21 was developed from a McDonnell Douglas MD-90 fuselage and has wings designed by Ukraine’s Antonov Design Bureau and GE engines.  In the 1990's McDonnell Douglas licensed China to produce the MD-90 using tooling imported from the United States.  The Chinese kept the tooling and are now producing the ARJ-21.

There is currently a backlog of 302 orders for this aircraft and the FAA has said they will likely certify it for America.  Would you feel comfortable flying on this aircraft?

The Comac C919 is in testing phases and competes directly with the 737 and Airbus A320, but costs 12 million less.  It currently has a backlog of 517 orders.

No. The Chinese cut corners so often in production that they cannot be trusted. I can easily see one of their subcontractors substituting a lower grade of steel for bolts, for example. This could lead to catastrophic failure.

They do it all the time...http://www.defensetech.org/2011/11/08/counterfeit-parts-found-on-new-p-8-posiedons/?mobile=1

No comparison. The Japs were already industrialized and after the war they went for as low a cost as high quality would permit, which easily beat Detroit's bloated budgets, with a view to developing a good reputation.

The Chinese have cut their own throats by sacrificing quality and competing on price alone.  No regard for Made In China as a brand.  They'll be forever known as makers of disposable trinkets.  Even if a manufacturer does everything right, no one will trust them.

I'm noticing an effort to reverse the perception with warranty promises but I don't think it'll take, especially if people insist on the warranty being honored.  Garbage is still garbage even if you put a warranty on it and it'll be nothing but a headache for those who choose to sell it.  I recently bought a grinder/linisher.  3 year warranty.  Ok.  It didn't run at all, straight out of the box, something wrong with the motor.  At exchange, they told me if this one fails too that I should try a better brand, lol.  Nope.  You chose to sell it with a 3 year warranty, you now owe me an operable sharpening machine for the next 3 years, and it's gonna see heavy use too.  I've got a photocopy of the receipt taped to the bottom so I can easily find the original in my quarterly files, which is, of course, what they rely on people not doing.  If it didn't come from a hardware store that I frequent all the time, or if it was something I really needed to rely on, I'd never have bought Chinese, but it'll be interesting to see how many of these units I go through.  3 year warranty?  We'll see.

The Chinese haven't figured out you have to build brands.  I can't think of one Chinese brand.

Well there's the "Great Wall" car company, lol!  I hate having one behind me.  What if the brakes fell off?!  ;D

But right on.  Everything badged with a non-Chinese sticker and company color scheme, as if it wasn't made in China.  It's horseshit.

China invented gun powder, but in their entire history they have never invaded another country.  The minute the West got gun powder, we tried to take over the entire world.

The Chinese haven't fully embraced the free market system yet.  It's critically important that all companies be funded with privately owned money.  That's why capitalism works, because if the management of the company fails, the shareholders lose their money, or fail to make satisfactory returns.  That's not what's happening in China right now, and that's why they are producing so many shoddy products.  If I'm a state owned company, the state pays for everything when there are losses and doesn't expect any return on capital.  This is why communism and socialism fail.

dont forget the capitalist bailout of bloated airlines and carmanufacturers by the US government in recent years

I'm not forgetting them and don't forget the too big to fail banks. Let them fail!

Has the federal government developed a procedure for winding down a too big to fail company yet?  I haven't heard it.  Why wasn't that job one for Obama.  What the hell has he been doing the last seven years?

I'm still coming to terms with the fact that America has become Socialist.

I can tell you the first Western European airline will be Ryanair.  They are getting ready to place an order for 200 C919's.
