Yes, he did. He was about 21 years old in 1980 and he won the Best in Australia contest that was held on the same day as the 1980 Mr. Olympia in Sydney. He then competed in the IFBB Mr. Universe in Manila, Philippines and he placed 6th in the light heavyweight class. He said he was still natural up to that point.

John really had a great physique. When I put together this interview, I was looking for some good videos of him in competition or guest posing and he had a very good aesthetic physique along with some good size. Part 2 of the interview should be up in another week or so.
