I was 22, at the mall.   group of kids walked thru my group of friends.  one of them took a swing/slap at me, grazed side of my head, IIRC.   I considered fistfighting strangers in a crowded mall, or pulling my glock and pumping 11 rounds into his frame, but decided to shake it off and keep walking.

These days, I wouldn't let a group get that close, and I'm not exactly the look of person they'd randomly walk into.   Wouldn't happen today, but even if assaulted today, if it's not a forcible felony and life isn't in danger, I"m not going to murder someone because I'm upset.  

Prison is full of dudes who just couldn't let shit slide, who had to prove themselves.  

Lots of people who don't carry a gun have opinions on it.  AJ and others, many of whom I disagree with on many debates, agree you don't just start scrapping and shooting in this situation.

there's just a way to do things.

If you CREATE the situation, don't use your gun when things don't go your way.
Always try to take 5 steps back from a confrontation.
Don't kill in crowds.

Don't appear to be prey, I guess, is the best one.   You can tell by looking at someone, if they're dreading a fight, or if they're just one of those people who would love to smash an idiot's face thru a table for therapy.   just give off the vibe that the place is full of soft targets, but you aren't one.  I didn't know how to do that as a kid.  Today, I'm effective at it.
