Ok, some insults were exchanged  and negative ads produced, etc.

BUT, I have to think that the election of 1860 was a more divided and violent time.
BECAUSE WE HAD A CIVIL WAR!

Blame the media for it.  They've set out to purposefully divide the country.  And not only is it working as intended, but it's had time to build up to the fever pitch it is now.

It seems absurd to me.
They always talk about the civility of the founding fathers .
