Getbiggers best book and movie 2016
« on: December 12, 2016, 06:32:42 AM »
The year is nearly over, so what's the best movie (or docu) you've watched and book you've read this year? Want to see if I missed any gems this year and catch up.

Books wise, I enjoyed "The Rise and Fall of Communism" wanted to fill gaps in my knowledge on this subject and this book was perfect. Intesresting and enjoyable read.

Movies The Fundamentals of Caring, funny with depth.

I appreciated Hacksaw Ridge, but was disappointed in Billy ______?_____ long half time walk.

Family members worked on a couple of the Superhero and FX films but I have yet to see any of them due to lack of interest in those type of films lately.

Looking forward to seeing LA LA LAND simply because it appears to be so much different than the big block busters that have saturated the screens.

Television - 11.23.63 on Hulu. It came out early, and was restricted to Hulu, so many folk may not have seen it. Very fine little mini series, and my favorite show of 2016. A book adaption as it should be done -

.

Also quite liked the little Showtime series Quarry that was based on the pulp novels of the 70's. Dark and quirky -

.

For those that want to give it a shot, someone uploaded some episodes here - www.youtube.com/channel/UCx2rIwSYppXhf32i3jE7zMQ .

Also the Italian series Gomorrah was excellent, thanks to the getbiggers that recommended it -

.

(It just started to be broadcast on the US channel Sundance, so I guess it could count for 2016.)

--------------

Movies - I've really only seen 1 decent film, Blood Father. That being said - "Moonlight", "Fences", "Hell or High Water" all look interesting. Also, the film "Dog Eat Dog" I kinda want to see, but the reviews are :(, and I don't want it to sour me on the the cast or director, as I've really enjoyed their work in the past.

Documentaries -

This Mapplethorpe one is excellent -

.

-------------------

No books this year, as I was mostly reading through older stuff that I missed, and haven't gotten around to anything from 2016.

I think Hacksaw Ridge gets released in the UK next year. Haven't seen it but it seems to have got a lot of praise.
I haven't actually seen any stand out movies so far this year.

SUPER, Strange thing about HACKSAW RIDGE ... It's based on a true story that occurred on Okinawa during WWII.

I was stationed on OKI twice but had never heard of that ridge/battle until this movie was released.

Well the only movie I went to see in a theater last year was the new Star Wars so I'll go with that ;D
I've read so many books in the last year it's hard to keep track but I just finished the latest Bernard Cornwell
book "The Flame Bearer" in two days and it was very, very good.
