I remember in 1991, none of my friends wanted to believe Sergei's name was pronounced "Sir Gay", opting to slam me and claim it was "Sir Jay" instead.  Finally one day I brought a tape over from the 1991 hockey awards where Sergei won the NHL All-Rookie Team, and one of my friends said "You can tell by the look on his face that he's not happy with that pronunciation." 

It's amazing what True-believer syndrome can do to a person.
