I met him briefly when working out in a Gold's gym around Charlotte NC about 30 years ago.
Spotted him on a few sets when he asked and was happy to do it.
Didn't say too much, ask for a pic or bug him while training.

I guess he preferred that. On the way out, I was stopped by the guy at the desk.
He left me a couple of passes for the wrasslin' that night in Charlotte. 100% serious.

I loved when he would always climb to the top turnbuckle and pause for a minute...  then get thrown off.  As young as I was, I kept thinking "why does he pause up there, why not just jump"

As I got older, I realized that he paused up there because he never completed the move before and didn't know what came next.   

Right after he became a face, I was at the Omni as he finally made it to the top and jumped off to deliver a double axe handle.  The place came unglued.  Not because it hurt Funk, but because HE FINALLY GOT TO PULL OFF A TOP ROPE MOVE!!!

Yea wrestling is as fake as any tv series we watch, it's acting but mostly physical acting, it has its heros and bad guys and as you say a storyline.
I grew out of it a long time ago but did tune in for goldbergs return and am still impressed with the physicality involved.
