On a serious note, its the same reason teachers and scientists get paid 100000X less than pro athletes and actors, yet provide a more important service to society. People like watching entertainment and are willing to pay for it (with money or views - which translate into money). Pretty much everyone with a decent income is guilty of this. Would you rather give $100 to a scientist for his work on cancer research or go see your favorite band live in concert?
The only time I truly felt good about paying money for entertainment and thought "I'm funding something important here" is when I paid to see Neil deGrasse Tyson live. I learned some shit, and part of the money went to the Planetary Society.
