As an outsider who likes the U.S., i'm struck by how easily many Americans put themselves (and their fellow citizens) so neatly into one of two nice 'n tidy "baskets."  I'm conservative on some issues and more liberal on others, and i've voted for candidates of different political stripes on a case by case basis.
