He should have been open about it in the beginning though.
Trump won his election by landslide openly stating - basically in every rally and debate - he sees better relations with Russia as a good thing. This indicates it was OK for the people. So why hide it if you have been working for that goal. If they had continued to be open about this it would have also took off the ammo from media hostile to Trump.

Of course the claims of Russia interfering in US election is total hoax. Putin himself said that American is great power and not some banana republic so Russia has no means to affect their elections. Although he smiled in mean way after that comment
