Question for gun folk
« on: August 17, 2017, 06:17:54 PM »
When you legally buy a handgun in the US,are you allowed to carry it with you or you have to keep it at home?

Does every citizen have the right to buy one?

I know these things vary somewhat from state to state....

But generally?

It all varies state to state whether you can carry it with you or not and how it can be carried, there's states that have concealed carry laws and states that have open carry laws and each state has specific laws for if you can or can't carry and how it can be carried.  Conceal carry permits can be done at the state level or at the county/city level so the onus is on you to figure that out.  It can get hairy when traveling across state lines so it's important you do the homework to figure all that out ahead of time.

And yes, every citizen who isn't a felon can buy a handgun and have it in your home, the law only comes into affect when you carry in public.  Some states have laws for keeping a gun in the home if you have minors living there as well so it's really up to you to figure that out.  Go to any local gun store and they can probably fill you in on local and state laws.

Here in Nevada you can open carry or apply -AND GET - a concealed weapon permit {CCW} as long as you have a valid Nevada drivers lic.
I started the process two days after I moved here to obtain my CCW. Haven't walked the streets unarmed since.
Check list before I leave my house.

As long as you don't have a criminal record, noted substance abuse problem, or have been committed for mental illness reasons, you'd be able to buy a standard rifle, shotgun, or handgun. Here is the standard form you fill out at a gun shop - http://www.atf.gov/file/61446/download . There are other rules for things like machine guns, Sawed off rifles/shotguns, etc.....

As you noted certain states, usually in the upper mid-Atlantic, lower New England make it harder. Also California, Hawaii, Chicago, Washington DC.

Right to carry is a sticky topic, but it is generally pretty easy in most states to get a CCW permit. Some states, about 60% of the country, allow open carry (must be showing gun in open view) with no permit. A few allow both concealed and open with no permit, and most allow it if you have a permit valid in another state.

Yup there's some reciprocity among some states and carry permits, I think there's a chart somewhere that you can look up that will show you what 3 states to get your permit in and that will get you access to carry in almost every state minuses the handful of uber liberal states.

In California, there aren't any state laws restricting carry permits being issued, but depending on what county you live in, the Sheriff has jurisdiction over whether or not he/she will issue.  Like in LA county the Sheriff "may issue" and in Ventura county to the north and Orange county to the south, the sheriffs there "shall issue".  But then again California is run by a bunch of communists so it's typically not like that in every state.

I used to have a Ruger Sr9---that was my first gun--had too many problems with it and it was brand new.
I have large hands and wide fingers---I never REALLY liked the feeling when of it at the range.
Did a little research---eventually just went with the Sig.
Zero issues --few mis fires--and most importantly it fits my hands pretty good.
PLus it was one of the guns used to kill Bin Laden.

Sigs are definitely nice.  Too bad your Ruger was a pain, I have a Ruger P95 that has never had a single problem whatsoever.

I'm trying to decide what to get for my concealed, kinda liking the Smith & Wesson M&P .45 shield.  I know 1911s are like the cadillac of concealed, but man that shield has great reviews and is an excellent price too.

The H&K 416 (standard SOCOM issue) has the credit for that, most SEALS haven't been carrying MK25's for a while and have been running glocks, with the official move to the 19 pretty much in progress.

I should have said ONE of the weapons used to kill Bin laden.

http://www.tactical-life.com/news/sig-sauer-pistol-used-to-kill-bin-laden-is-big-demand/

However that H&K is a beautiful piece of work.
I almost got to fire one a few years ago.
Missed my chance.
