Which americans are you referring to? There was no real divide in this country until the black civil rights movement and vietnam.

Unfortunately the rush to pass the communism control act of 1954 which was unanimously approved by both democrats and republicans was plagued by a number of constitutional problems which would have undermined its effectiveness. The communist  subversion of this country is nearly complete.

Imo, the whole "hippy" thing was begun as a con, to separate the younger ones away from the values of the older ones.  Major disruption to society, turning it upside down.
