Parrots (from the jungle)
« on: November 24, 2017, 10:56:39 AM »
I was in the mall a walked past a pet store with a parrot out front. I heard the parrot speak a few words and it got me wondering. Do these animals which we have imported from the jungle and speak words of our language actually know what they're saying?  I think the parrot trade is probably waned a bit, but they still seem to make it over here. Who really wants these things around? I've heard there's been a resurgence of importing jungle parrots in Europe. Any of you Europeans have any insight as to their language skills in your area? Just wondering if these animals, which speak our words, truly understand them.

My aunt and uncle regularly looks after some form of parrot (I’m not clued up on the type so not sure the exact breed) for their friend who travels a lot, this one definitely knows to a certain extent what it’s saying, has learned who certain people are by name, also learned who my mothers dog is and calls his name when he enters the house and even teases him asking if he wants a biscuit which the dog sits at his cage expecting one.

For the most part no they don't. Except when they tell you to fuck off....then those little fuckers know exactly what they're saying.

if u associate the words 'yum yum' with a desired food choice.... some birds will ask for a 'yum yum', and comprehend what it means, I think. I think that... cuz if a dog was capable of speech... they sure as fuk would.

Always had a weakness for parrots but I have no idea if they have an idea about the shit they're reurgitating... same as with their owners.  :D

Pretty sure there exist elaborate studies about their cognitive ablities.

kind of interesting, this bird is a bit beyond the most basic.  as zillotch said, its sound (word) association with an object, or desire.  using language in a more abstract manner to express ideas is likely beyond them.
