I like Atlanta, it is a nice airport and as long as you don't have a 30 minute layover, everything is well laid out.  Chicago or Detroit are my least favorite.  Newark is shitty too.

O'hare $8.5 billion expansion will be the most expansive remodel in the airport’s 73-year history.   the expansion will add a new runway, 35 new gates, and 3 million square feet to its footprint, an increase of 72% over the current 4.3 million square feet.

My favorites :

Madrid - OMG.  You walk the concourse and see an open type seating  restaurant that is in the shape of a long oval...  it is a meat lover's dream.  There are these huge racks of meat in the center in a sealed cylinder.  You order, they open up the door and start cutting/shaving the meat off the rack right there.  Then throwing it on the grill or hot plate.  These are not little slabs either.  You will see the entire side of cows, lambs, pigs, etc.. on display.

Narita - Just because it is so damn weird and probably the best people watching spot I have ever seen.   Things that I have seen there... Japanese school boys stuffing udon noodles in the panties of their school teacher or chaperone while she slept.  Countless impromptu sumo matches from famous sumo wrestlers who crossed paths there.  If I slammed someone through the glass window of a Duty Free store, I would be going to jail.  These people here cheer and get autographs later.   A line at the McDonalds that had a 3 hour wait time.  Karate demostrations in the bathrooms with the martial artist jumping around in his underwear.  Some fucking weird ass whiskey that someone brought that had a plant growing out of the top the bottle....

Worst ones :

Las Vegas - the slot noise is awful.

Hawaii - piss poor shitty airport with the executive lounges outside... downstairs... open air walkway... no A/C and all drinks and snacks you pay for.

Hands down Singapore's Changi complex is the best hub I've ever been through. It's obvious they've gone to great lengths to make a stopover/flight change there as pleasant an experience as possible.

Narita is awesome for it's coolness. Like LurkerNoMore said - you see things in Narita you won't see anywhere else.

The worst of the big internationals is either Newark or JFK - both pretty shitty, or Frankfurt, which is enormous, ugly, poorly signed and staffed with complete assholes. I'm sure there are worse places, but this is THE major airport in Germany - an important global player. It's complete shit and the Germans should be embarassed about it. They've done a good job with Hamburg and Munich so I don't know why Frankfurt is such a cluster fuck but it is.

I pay extra now just to fly through Zurich so I can avoid that place.

But yeah - hands down, Changi airport is the best I've seen.

America's 50 largest airport are spending a combined $70 Billion over the next four years on development projects.  Almost 70 percent of that money is going to new, renovated, or expanded terminals.

Airport Consultants Council:
Multi-billion new terminal projects are underway or planned at:

LaGuardia(LGA) ($8.5b),

Salt Lake City (SLC) ($2.9b)

SFO ($2.4b),

Newark (EWR)($2.3b)

San Diego (SAN) ($2.3b)

Portland (PDX) ($1.3b)

Seconded on FRA being shit. When visiting curry country I intentionally fly via Bangalore to avoid it. It's a bad sign when an Indian airport beats a German one.

For me, I also think Abu Dhabi is okay, if a bit gaudy.

I try to avoid big airports whenever possible, but Atlanta is easy enough to get around quickly.  As for other airports not mentioned,  Charlotte, Raleigh–Durham, and Greensboro are nice.  Milwaukee is super easy, never crowded and a great alternative to Shitcago and usually cheaper than Midway.  Kansas City is also very simple to navigate and get through quickly.  John Wayne/OC California (SNA) also very easy.  Long Beach is nice, but not a lot of connections, anything to avoid LAX.  Phoenix = simple, Vegas = simple but overcrowded and noisy.  St. Louis = honorable mention. Denver isn't bad, HOWEVER, delays are frequent due to quickly changing weather patterns around the mountains so avoid if at all possible. Pilots even hate Denver because of the mountians.
