Managers Who Get Demoted, But Keep The Same Pay
« on: July 26, 2018, 04:24:07 PM »
Does this occur at your company?  My company doesn't fire managers, they just demote them to a lower level.  The odd thing is they keep the same pay.

I've had two managers that were demoted.  One was by choice, the other wasn't.  They both were happier after the demotion because they still had a job making the same pay, but their stress and responsibility was significantly reduced.  This occurs at all levels of management.

Is this how your company operates, or are managers just fired when they don't perform, or are they demoted, but keep the same pay?

I work for General Motors and many times upper management is demoted with the same level of pay. The entry level managers are usually let go.

Getbiggers don't have managers. They run their portfolios from their yacht.

Getting less responsibility while keeping the same level of pay is the best of both worlds!

i had a manager that was demoted from general manager to project manager

he was paid the same and had far less responsibility, but they made the agreement to let him stay on as project manager for only 1 year and then he would be let go

Happens all the time.  They'll put the "manager" into a lower level position, but into a position with a pay scale range that fits the existing position's pay.  So if the "manager" is making $100K/year and the pay range for a PM is $75K-$100K, they can be put there, but they're at the ceiling.  The good news for a PM making $85K is that they can aspire to $100K within their same position if they meet or exceed all their metrics.  It's a numbers game.  Many higher end manager's egos can't handle the the demotion/title and work themselves out of a job.

It's often done with people a firm wants to get rid of but don't have enough grounds.

It's much worse outside the US - in countries like the Netherlands you need a fcuking court permit to fire people no matter the grounds.

At my company managers get fired all the time. The highest level you can obtain with union protection is group leader. Junior managers start at around 85k. I hit that figure by September each year with union protection.
