In two years of living in Holland, I had one bicycle stolen.  Zero violent crime.  The scariest people I encountered were drunken English football fans in town for a game.

Many crimes aren't reported: police have very little manpower, and so often are unable to act
Naive judges: lots of convicts (16,000) didn't show up at prisons were they were told to go to....so they were convicted, but are still free alas
Politically correct media do not report everything, and often keep the country of origin or ethnic backgrond of criminals quiet
Facts are hidden or disguised by Dutch government and left wing media: especially about islam and violence, and ethnic minorities and crime
Closing jails: left wing judges refuse to hand out proper sentences. In other words, many criminals don't even do prison time unfortunately

I am one of those people. Sounding smart is a world away from being smart. In the U.S. a lot of smart people sound stupid. The bottom line is that actions speak louder than words. Dialects and linguistics have a lot of influence on how people think about other people because of the way they talk.
