Why are you making an assumption that he is getting married? In the US “fiancé” has two meanings. One is the traditional meaning, and second just basically means gf/bf, but wanting it to mean the traditional way. A clue to which he is referring to is a mention of a wedding date. Unless they talking about a date that is set, then it’s the “play” or “fake” fiancé meaning.
There's not many men who still want marriage, but the ones who do invariably fall into the slipstream of these three fast-moving currents:
1) A broke, uneducated, simple-minded man of limited means who has nothing to lose and wants a girlfriend that won't leave him for another blue-balled loser 2 weeks later. This type of guy tries his best at having as many kids as possible with his soon-to-be-wife.
2) Men with resources, good jobs, careers etc. who want a trophy to show off. You see it a lot with actors who've had many marriages, like John Cleese, Kelsey Grammer, Donald Trump, etc.
3) Guys from non-White communities where marriage is part of their culture.
4) Two weirdos who aren't a perfect fit and for some reason the woman doesn't get bored of it or find someone better or richer so they kind of settle for each other. This is 90% of who we see in the parking lot of Costco or Walmart, the balding, fat-bellied man in plaid shorts, sandals, a too-short golf shirt that doesn't cover his waistband overhang and the ugly wife with several kids in a stroller (or grown).
