that's hand span the average male's hand span is 8 and a half. gronk shown below is close to 11 makes it easier to throw and catch the football.span is measured from end of pinkie to end of thumb of an outstretched hand.

Robert Wadlow (USA), the tallest man ever, had hands that measured 32.3 cm (12.75 in) from the wrist to the tip of his middle finger. He wore a size 25 ring. Wonder what his outstretched measurement was!
