Are you blaming Bill Clinton?
Bill Clinton like every US president was just a face of the political machinery behind. Same goes for Donald Trump who is currently strangely loved in Serbia as somebody that would have white man, Christian interests protected. Unfortunately, being a politician, in order to save your job and at least get some of your ideas translated into reality you have to be really good at compromise. And that is definitely not Trump's strong point.
But back to my point. There are no conspiracies here. If you read and follow several different sources of news it is not that hard to, over the years, draw some conclusions. That is, Yugoslavia as a country, since 1948, pretended to be a socialist/communist creation but the standard of living was comparable to Western Europe. This is because USA used it as a leverage against the Soviet Union and the "threat of global communism" and heavily subsidized the country. In other words, Yugoslavia was simply a CIA outpost toward Eastern Europe. With the fall of Soviet Union this pan-Slavic utopia became obsolete so that USA abandoned financing this money pit. This and escalating extremist nationalistic tendencies of Catholic Croatians vs Orthodox Serbs coupled with the country-wide corruption and massive federal property theft led to a civil war.
In the initial confusion USA stood by Germany which historically has had a problem with Serbs (Austro-Hungarian prince Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian thus World War I ensued). Therefore, Serbia almost immediately lost media war and was portrayed as a bad guy. Of course, our president at the time nicknamed the 'Balkan Butcher' had a huge, negative role to play in it, cutting off ties with Americans and pissing off the world exercising a heavy-handed approach to an Albanian population explosion growth problem in Serbia's south province of Kosovo.
From then on it was easy to paint a black and white picture of the conflict. Little did the Americans know that Kosovo was the place of the famous battle in 1389 where Serbian Armies met with the overwhelmingly stronger Ottoman (read extreme Sunni Muslim) forces and lost. But, one of the Serbian generals, pretending to seek a meeting with the Ottoman sultan Murad I, got close to him and stabbed him to death. The Ottoman Empire pillaged through the Balkans, got to Vienna and was finally stopped by a Union of European peoples. Of course, Europe left the Balkans to be enslaved by the Islamists for 500 years but the Serbian mentality survived and the country was re-created in 1918, after World War I with the help of mighty Russian Empire.
On a side note, this is the only battle in the history of a man-kind where the losing side celebrates it until this day.
So, we might be poor and getting fucked from all sides but one thing we have coming out of our collective Serbian assess is defiance. Any time you talk to any Serbian you'll get a hint of that. Defiance to the laws of the country they are living in, to being receptive to other religions, and so on...
Geographically, Kosovo is where the line was drawn between Christianity and Islam for us a long time ago. Actions of the others in this region define them in Serbian minds painting the same black and white picture we as Yugoslavs were portrayed as 20 years ago.
Just fucking unfortunate..
