So it's no surprise that the most productive and inventive employees eventually leave these firms. Slowly but surely, these managers become more and more entrenched into their positions and they start hiring loyal employees. .

I was in sales at JPM for many years and same thing happened.

But guys, you're missing the point. It's not about IBM only, it's about a generation of individuals that are ill-equipped to lead a technology team.

Imagine we're in the early stages of the Industrial Revolution. Imagine that all the managing directors in all the companies engaged in harnessing the new technological advancements are only experienced in horse and carriage kind of shit.

Now, step back, think about it. What do you think is going to happen to the companies that insist on letting inadequate individuals lead technology teams?

Wanna know how they got around it (with the help of every human resources office out there)? They created a new layer of employees called "SMEs" (subject matter experts). The decision-making process was effectively shifted from the managerial ranks to the SMEs, and the managers now get to the decide what the best option is based on the information they were fed (this is the modern version of "leading"). I KID YOU NOT.

If a mistake is made, the blame is always passed onto the SME.

Slapper what do you do for a living?

They fire/lay-off the older workers because they are at the high end of the salary scale in the corp.

It's all about saving money.

The stuff about millennials is just BS.

I now work for a financial services firm and part of my function is human resources-related.

You would not believe the conversations I have to have with some of these motherfuckers. Some have egos so big that they carry out interviews like they're doing a clinical psychology evaluation. I keep on telling them to keep it simple and always go with the candidate that can solves their and the company's problems. They always ALWAYS look for candidates with a similar background. Kinda like an extension of home. They DO NOT like to be challenged.

I can smell their shit from a mile away but I can't go above their heads and warn their managers about them because I do not know how deep the goombah circle of trust is.

At the same time, every time I talk to some of these people, I can smell my 401(k) shrinking by the second.

^ This. I worked at GE Semiconductor as my first job out of college. 6 months later they purged every engineer over 55, claiming it was downsizing of business because of market conditions ::)

As for the comment earlier that tech is a young mans game- no, software is. Next generation devices such as higher density chips is an older guys game. The top guys I know at Samsung Semi, Infineon, Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor are all 50+. The knowledge they have runs circles around new engineers.
