Taffin - out of curiosity, are you familiar with the Ironage horror series "Tales from the Crypt" - and specifically its co-series "The Haunt of Fear", illustrated by "Ghastly" Graham Ingels?

Whether you are or not, I think you would enjoy the following story, which relates to what you saying, and goes to show the lengths to which one man was willing to go to enjoy exactly what you described:

May/June 1952 - For the Love of Death!
A lonely man decides to take the place of the corpse at a funeral so he can enjoy the eulogies and ceremony for the deceased. Assuming, of course, that he can get out of the coffin again ...

These people sicken me.  "He/she was so loving, and will be missed by all.  Earth's loss is heaven's gain.  Heaven gained a new angel today", and so on.  Meanwhile, the person was a piece of shit, who treated everyone around them like garbage.
