Friedrich Hayek On Affirmative Action
« on: December 09, 2021, 01:14:21 PM »
Starts at 9:10.

Hayek:
Explain what Affirmative Action is supposed to mean?  I never really understood what it's supposed to mean.

Tom Hazlett:
Well, it's founded on the argument that if the government treats everyone equally now in terms of race that it will implicitly be sanctioning past discrimination.  Hence, it is necessary for the state to take so called affirmative action and for private employers to take affirmative action in hiring minorities and groups the government classifies as having been discriminated against and favoring them over groups that have been classified as not being discriminated against.

Hayek:
Achieve non discrimination by discrimination.   Ha ha ha.

...with reverse outcomes as well. All it ever does is cause terrible dysfunction within a merit based capitalist company. The exception is govt, which is immune to the usual requirements for efficiency, capability and responsibility.

What then when the majority are favoured with AA against a shrinking minority?
