They are using unemployment as a marker for how hard they can push interest rates. If unemployment doesn’t break they know they can keep raising rates in order to control inflation.

People complained about inflation and now people complain about the govt when they try and control inflation.

Since covid/lockdowns/2020 average savings were up something like threefolds (forget the exact stat) They want people to burn through those savings and back in debt.
