From south to north the longest distance in of the city of Chicago is 25 miles. The traffic would need to be very congested for it to take that long to drive those few miles. Perhaps your friend meant Chicago's metro area which is considerable being as how it is the third largest in the U.S. Hwy 294 runs 54 miles from South to North through the Chicago Metro area. Two hours for that distance makes sense.
Have you ever driven in Chicago? Yeah, 2 hours is totally believable. It took me an hour plus to go 10 miles when I left O'Hare once. In Boston and DC I got stuck in gridlock where it took half an hour to go two blocks.
