Native Detroiters
« on: February 18, 2023, 09:06:30 AM »
Watched a legends of bodybuilding show and John Hansen interviewed Ron Love.

Starts off slow. Ron's not super articulate and his memory ain't that great but the interview gets better as he starts talking about his pro career.  Funny story about Rachel Mclish and his fight with Phil Hill. Some other interesting takes..... maybe not the most fluid interview but in the Motor City Ron Love was a legend both as a cop and a bodybuilder so if you were ever a friend or fan of Ron its a good show.

It's always good to hear from other Detroiters. Its a unique place and you know when you're talking with a native- half of everything said sounds like bulkshit but if you've ever lived there you know it's true.

Weirdly enough,I`m watching Johns interview with Boyer Coe right now.

I`ll check out Ron Loves too......great physique, and these shows are awesome.

I have a funny Ron Love story. A friend of mine was a bouncer at a strip club with Ron Love in the mid 2000’s said Ron was a great dude but was fired for allegedly stealing strippers tips.

At that time in the early to mid 2000's he got into quite a bit of legal trouble and IIRC it had to do with money problems.

He seems ok now. During his interview he said he was 70 and getting ready to a guest posing. The interview was last year so who knows if he actually did it.

Ron Love could have been an all-time Top 20 bodybuilder.

Crazy delts
Great V-taper
Symmetry
Always in shape

He just had unfortunate timing- he competed against so many phenomenal bodybuilders, and got involved a bit late in his life.

*and yes, I trained at ARMENTO’S GYM many times. Any Detroit bodybuilder knows ARMENTOS.

My guy said Ron was a great dude, several different people I know all say the same, he didn't say that Ron stole the tips only that he was fired for it.  Im sure there was more to the story but I honestly don't remember.

Ron was a Detroit legend.

He was. I think it was before he got involved with bodybuilding.  I “think” he was shot while on duty (or injured)  and that’s why he left the profession.

The Thunder Bay of the USA!

From what I understand, the city's large crime rate is pretty segregated, much like in Chicago. Is that correct?

Also, not to talk smack, but do you know why Ron was in jail?

I believe he will be 72 this year.

Just once when I was a teenager. Some guy from up there came down and had some kind of dealings with a neighbor of mine. Anyway later that day a bunch of shit was missing from my garage. Got his address from my neighbor and me and a friend of mine drove up there. And sure as shit all my stuff was on his front yard lawn. No confrontation or anything. I didn't see the guy around so I just loaded my shit up and drove back to Detroit....anyway that was the one and only time Ive been to Grand Rapids.

He was shot a few years after joining the police force. His injury was why he got into weight lifting and bodybuilding.  Said he got fat while his leg healed so he went to the gym to get in shape. He was with DPD for almost all of his professional career and retired from DPD in the mid-late 90's. I didn't know him personally.  But knew people that knew him well. Same thing: everyone said he's a great guy.

Back around 2005 or 6  I was asking about him to some guys that had worked with him. I brought up his legal troubles and kind of chuckled.  In no uncertain terms I was told to watch my mouth.

I always thought his placings were because he wasn't part of that west coast California bodybuilding scene.  Samir lived in Detroit for awhile too but eventually relocated. I mean Ron had a good career but it seems he was often placed a lot lower than guys he was better than.

So, they didn't elaborate but they mentioned had to do with bad business dealings and a lot of money came up missing. They didn't say more. It was something like embezzlement.  But like I said they were kind pissed that i even asked. I guess they thought I was being disrespectful by bringing it up. And one woman he worked with was adamant that he didn't get jail time for it.

Sounds about right. Like I said EVERYONE I know,  who know him, spoke highly of Ron. I remember I asked my guy that worked with him if Ron had any bodybuilding advice, and he said he seemed honest but said something like don’t get involved with the sport for the money.

I feel bad for the old school guys when you see what the clowns today are able to pull in.
