Naim Süleymanoğlu [Turkish Olympic Weightlifter].
« on: March 17, 2023, 11:03:14 PM »
Great documentary:

I'm not sure if any Getbiggers follow weightlifting. I can't say I do, but I recognize a top athlete when I see one.

I didn't realize Naim died I'm 2017:

Quote
On 25 September 2017, Süleymanoğlu was admitted to a hospital due to liver failure.

Liver failure at 50?

Did he go his entire life not drinking, then make up for lost time?

Also, this:

Quote
Süleymanoğlu's grave was opened on July 4, 2018 for the purpose of extracting a DNA sample. Following his death, a Japanese woman had claimed that her daughter, Sekai Mori, had been fathered by him, and filed a paternity case at a Turkish court. A DNA test confirmed the paternity claim."

Sounds like a Getbigger.

When he defected from Bulgaria to Turkey (He was ethnically a Turk) in the mid 80's, he jumped into the party lifestyle. While weightlifting made him famous, he resented that the training under the Bulgarians stole his adolescence, this was back when Bulgarian training was multiple sessions per day, 6 days a week. As soon as he could he jumped into being a partier, and all that came with it.

Holy crap...so when he won the Olympics in 1996, he had years or even a decade of drinking under his belt?

To me, that is even more impressive in a way.

Yeah, 2000 was his last Olympics, and he admitted that smoking and partying, and just not enjoying training anymore took its toll on him.
He was from that old guard of ex-communist lifters that would smoke between sets, etc......
