Despite the best efforts of the media and the White House to promote a liberal agenda on issues from abortion to gender change, America has turned back to being more conservative.
Gallup’s latest Values and Beliefs Survey said that conservatives top liberals on social policies and the economy, the two biggest topics America is grappling with.
“For most of the past eight years, Americans were about as likely to say they were liberal as conservative on social issues. This year, there is a more obvious conservative advantage,” said the nation’s biggest pollster on Thursday.
“The shift is mostly due to increasing social conservatism among Republicans, at a time when social issues such as transgender rights, abortion and other hot-button concerns are prominent in the national public debate,” explained Gallup of the conservative backlash.
In the poll, 38% said they were conservative on social issues, while 29% said they were liberal. A year ago, the split was even at 34%. Today, 31% claimed to be moderates.
Gallup said that the last time this many were socially conservative was 2012.
In the analysis, Gallup noted that states have been enacting clashing social policies, suggesting that the public is reacting to those actions.
Notably, younger people have shifted right on social issues, Gallup said.
The nation’s economic conservatism has also ticked up, and conservatives now have a better than 2-1 advantage.
And strip out references to social and economic problems and just ask people about their leanings, the conservative advantage grows over liberals, said Gallup.
“When asked to describe their political views overall, without reference to social or economic issues, 40% say they have conservative views, 31% moderate and 26% liberal,” said the pollster.
