Personally, never heard a single Beatles song I thought was even a little pleasant. Same with ABBA.

But they are rated so highly which is a little confusing to me. These bands make me feel bad! Lol

“I rode a tank, held a generals rank, when the Blitskrieg raged at its finest stage”. Very intelligent lyrics in that song.

Off topic/on topic. I’m more of a Beatles fan although I do really like The Stones.

I lean Beatles too but Sympathy For the Devil is arguably my all time favorite song.

Good to see some Sympathy for the Devil fans in this thread, count me in on that

The Stones live version at Altamont is one of the most memorable and iconic 8 mins of rock music ever filmed

First and foremost as they were absolutely at their peak musically around this time, with new recruit Mick Taylor hitting his smoother, highly skilled guitar stride alongside Keith's trademark, choppy aggressive sound - just perfect. And Jagger was in full roar, with Charlie just being being Charlie, which was always enough

Then you add on the happenings during the song itself, for eg:

* 0:28  -  Nice looking girl at the front getting into the rhythm
* 0:33  -  The violence in the crowd escalates
* 1:20  -  Keef speaks through his guitar with an irritated chord strike when Mick tells him to stop playing so he can speak to the crowd to try and stop the fighting,
* 1:22  - Mick pleads with the crowd to cool down, but peacemaker isn't his thing, and the horse has bolted
* 2:15 -  Jagger comments that "It always happens, something very funny happens when we start that number", and thus elevates its dark mythical status for all time
* 2:23  -  The Stones start the song again, nice looking girl still loving it
* 3:34  - Random dog walks happily across the stage right in front of the band, completely oblivious to the chaos erupting all around
* 3:49  - Camera captures a Hells Angels local chapter leader (not sonny barger, who was also there and angry) staring at Jagger with the biggest look of disdain and contempt ever seen on film. In an interview decades later he was asked about it and confirmed the hate was real: basically he saw Jagger as a pansy singer and the Angels were only there for the free beer, not for babysitting some pop singer
* 5:42  -  Not-so-nice looking naked girl finally makes it to the stage front
* 5:50 - 6:37 -  The band sounding fucking amazing, at their raw primal best
* 6:38 -  Mick stops in his tracks after noticing the violence has kicked off again in a big way
* 6:51  - Guy in beret shakes his head sadly at MJ, upset about what is unfolding and seemingly being ignored, mouthing "why?"
* 7:09 - Jagger, in the face of a situation that is spiralling dangerously out of control, seemingly shuts down his reasoning skills and in some sort of weird denial mechanism begins to dance aggressively
* 7:50  - Girl crying in the front row having no doubt seen some of the bad shit that's happened in the crowd
* 7:58 -  Guy in glasses, despite being right next to the girl still upset and crying, appears to be having the time of his life lol
* 8:16  -  The song finishes as an injured person is brought on to the stage to then be carried away for treatment
* 8:23 - Jagger pleading to the crowd again "Who's fighting and what for. Why are we fighting!" to no avail

A few songs later a guy is stabbed to death by a Hells Angel while brandishing a gun towards the stage

And so ended the 60s

And on that positive note, happy weekend  :D

The lyrics are "...when the Blitzkrieg raged, and the bodies stank.".

One of the greatest songs of all time. I prefer the Stones to the Beatles, but the Beatles have some great tunes and had a massive enduring impact on music.

Much of the Beatles music wouldn't stand up today - but it was pioneering at the time. They were the first real boy band.

The whole industry has changed now - anyone can make their own music. My son sings, plays piano and drums and can produce his own tracks - but then so can millions of others - the technology is so easily available.

I think the problem is the amount of good music that goes unnoticed because of the way the industry is set up now.

There are still good bands performing today but don't get much attention.

This.

I'm constantly seeking out new music. Literally tons of great music out there.

You watch that entire concert and realize it was doomed. The stage being only elevated about 3’ above the lawn seats, the fact that they played in the lowest point and there were no chairs, essentially just funneling people to them. Surprised it wasn’t worse but also crazy that dude was going to shoot Mick.

I read that the Angels were so pissed about it they tried to kill him some time later on. I think they were in a boat or something near his house and were stopped by police.

This will be one of the most historic duets of all times once his fat ass dies. Just wait you'll see this on constant replay once he has a coke and pussy induced heart attack.

Yeah, the whole event is so darkly compelling, filled with foreboding: a makeshift, cobbled-together mini-armageddon that just happened to have the greatest soundtrack ever - performed live and in real time - as its backdrop

Then you have the kid that was killed looking like he was parachuted into the wrong movie, like an extra in a pam grier 70s exploitation film, with his bright green suit and fancy hat, in amongst a sea of hippies and bikies

All just so surreal and ripe with unintended generational symbolism

Yep, Jagger had a house in Montauk, NY, it butted up right against the water. The plan was to sneak over during the night, and either kill him straight away, or plant a huge bomb under the house and blow it up when he was known to be there. They even got the boat out and were heading over when a storm almost capsized them.

After that, Jagger got word of it, and doubled his security, and booked a heavy tour schedule with lots of false hotel reservations, etc.... to keep them guessing. In the meantime, the Hell's Angel that did the stabbing was acquitted, so the whole "kill Jagger" plotting fizzled out slowly.

On the flip side, the Grateful Dead grew closer to the Angels after the Altamont business. Garcia would play benefits for them, allow them free reign backstage, etc....

This.

I'm constantly seeking out new music. Literally tons of great music out there.
Napalm Records releases new music on Youtube every week of mostly European metal bands.
