I talked to him at Gold's once and was a really nice guy. Loved watching him play when I was a kid.

It's sad to see them fuck up. Sometimes their financial advisors and lawyers scam them to high heaven, too. Parasites out the woodwork to prey on their stupidity. Always worth banking a few mil with your mother as emergency funds that she can hold for you to cover a place to live and transport for your own good. Surely their family know they're dumbasses and need to be held closely when it comes to money decisions

It's even worse in the NFL. A 22 year old that never had a job before gets a four million dollar contract. He's not a super star but made it to the NFL. He buys his mom a house. He buys an expensive house for himself and 500K of cars. He knows nothing about money thinking he is set for life. Three years later he's out of the NFL and loses both houses and has to sell the cars for money. If only someone told him not to live large and that a plumber, cop, electrician and other trades make a million every 9 years or so, it would put into perspective his contract.

People in general don't live within their means and don't save enough. I wouldn't be surprised if most lottery winners who took a lump sum have a similar arc.

Lifespan of top tier athletics is quite short. Like you said, a trade is far superior in the long run if you have a brain. End up running your own teams and just travelling from site to site.

Many lottery winners grow up dirt poor just like many professional athletes. People are poor for a reason. Dumb fucks will lose all their money no matter how much they are handed.

If he just put 1 million of that in an Index Fund he would never be poor and living in a garage.
