I think it's a North American thing, and probably in the standard censorship package that's built into NA software. While offensive, it's not at the same level anywhere else. It still shows up in full form even in non- US news stories. It softening here now too, as we watch more British and foreign shows.

I think it goes back to when America was hyper religious, etc.... There is a turn we see here in the States in the 1800's where it goes from offensive, but common speech to verboten, and that coincides with another boom in modesty and religion in the States.
