How Much Protein is Too Much?
« on: June 08, 2006, 08:33:21 AM »
By way of background, I'm 37 y/o, 6'3, 222lbs, currently leaning out.  I record evey scrap of food I eat and tabulate daily totals on calories, protein, carbs, fat and fiber.  I'm working out 4-5 days per week, heavy weights, moderate number of sets with 1-2 days cardio thrown in (depending on my schedule, or how run down I'm getting).

Now the question:  the trend I've noticed as I try to cut calorie consumption and keep my ravenous appetite under control is that my daily protein consumption is going up and up and up, with the last several being 260-270g.
(It's spread out on average over 10 servings. including 1-2 nighttime feedings and I'm getting plenty of water (1.5-2 gals) and fiber).

Is there any drawback to my escalating protein consumption?  I would hate to cut back as it seems to be working for now.  Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Know a good way to monitor excess protein consumption? When you train and sweat...do you smell a slight scent of ammonia? How about your shirt the next day...or your gym bag? Does it smell like ammonia a little bit? Thats usually a sign. Holla!

Thanks for the good advice.  If I do reach a stage of excess protein consumption, what are the adverse effects if any?

Rambo you should be eating more protein than that everyday. Especially since your leaning out!

I'm 19yrs, 205lbs and I eat between 250-300g of protein a day. I seem to be ok, so I think you are all good, if not consuming too little
