The "Mainstream Dream" is dead . . .
« on: July 27, 2006, 12:11:24 PM »
I went to Chapters today to pick up a novel and the latest issue of Flex. I was served by an attractive blonde cashier, pretty face with a thick waist, who revealed a truth many have refused to acknowledge.

When she saw the picture of Phil Heath on the cover she shuddered and called it "scary". I laughed and said I found it motivating. She just gave a half smile and shook her head.

I realized that for all this talk about how the new breed of aesthetic physiques were to usher in a new life for bodybuilding within mainstream culture was a load of bollocks.

No matter what we want to believe, the truth is that not even Phil Heath can make our sport mainstream.

The Mainstream Dream is dead.

Well, in fairness to Attractive Blonde Cashier, scowling black men with enormous muscles can be somewhat intimidating.

Photograph Heath in a nicely tailored suit, smiling and holding a bouquet of roses, and I bet she'd start fingering herself right there at the register.
