I think a better question is, "Is it possible for pro bodybuilding to take a step back?". Stating the obvious, it seems like pro bodybuilding - both male and female - has been on an uncontrolled rise towards greater and greater mass, aesthetics and proportion be damned. Even with mandates for limited stomach distention for men and more feminity for women, there's still the basic issue of mass at any price. The drugs are there to do it, it's being done. It seems no one wants to be first to take a step back and try for a more "classic" approach with balance and symetry. Frankly if they did, they'd place last anyway, since the other competitors would outsize them. Pro bodybuilding is its own worst enemy. Once it hits a certain milestone or mark, it really can't go backwards, be it striated glutes or extreme mass.
I hate to say it, but I strongly prefer the physiques from the early 90's and prior to the physiques of today. Obviously there were drugs then and well before then, but for whatever reason, the drugs, training and diet all had a different effect than they do now (and were obviously much more appealing to the mainstream, considering how far we've taken a step back in television and other popular coverage these days from then). It's a pity, but side effects aside, drug mixes probably peaked from a physique enhancement standpoint by the early 90's. After that, it was too much. Sadly, I don't think we can go back, though I'd like us to. And yes, I'm one of those "asses" who would prefer everyone to go natural, because I'd really love to see what the total bodybuilding population could achieve through natural means. We may never know what a truly genetically gifted person's true potential could be with the latest in training, "natural" supplementation and diet, since the pool with which we draw from goes in all different kinds of directions (meaning some go the drug route, some don't bother to compete because they don't want to take drugs, etc.; it's a crapshoot who ends up doing what rather than everyone doing the same types of stuff).
